Current research
I am exploring how borderland communities developed between two ancient Mayan kingdoms that were political, economic and military rivals. This involves identifying, mapping and excavating ancient settlements  in the area between the ancient Maya capitals of Piedras Negras and Yaxchilan — a region that now lies within Guatemala’s Sierra del Lacandon National Park.

Favorite classroom experience
In my Introduction to Archaeological Analysis course, students conduct original research on artifacts in our department’s collection or on gravestones in the Waltham area. As students delve into the history of the artifacts and gravestones, they begin to see what material objects can tell us about ancient cultures and start to experience the excitement of doing archaeology. These are my favorite moments.
